Interview with Marcela Pu Tiu, health promoter in the community of Agua Escondida
Marcela Pu Tiu lives in the community of Agua Escondida (Hidden Water), which is seven kilometers from the center of Cunén. In her community, she serves as a health and nutrition promoter and wants to share some of her achievements with us.
Good morning, Marcela! Thank you for taking the time to talk with us. Tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do.
Good morning! My name is Marcela Pu Tiu and I live here in the community of Agua Escondida with my husband and my five children. I have been a health promoter in my community for three years now. In total, there are 15 promoters in my community.
Your family was one of 62 families that participated in the AVANT program. Could you tell us what this project was?
In Agua Escondida this project consisted of pumping water from its natural source to a tank located in the community. Tubes were installed connecting this tank to the houses of all of the families that participated in the project. Now all of the families have water in their houses and we don’t have to walk to the water source various times a day. The water source is more than a half an hour from our house and there are families that live even further away. Before participating in the project, we had to go twice a day to collect water from the source. We would leave our house at 3 in the morning and return at 4:30 a.m. and then later we would go back at 5 in the evening to return by 7. Now we don’t have to dedicate so much time to collecting water.
