Strategic Plan for 2007-2021

Based on the successes achieved and the challenges faced with partner communities since 1990, FUNCEDESCRI created a strategic work plan for the 2007-2021 timeframe. This plan elaborates FUNCEDESCRI’s strategies to support our partner communities in achieving food security and food sovereignty.

What is food security?

Food security is:

  • ensuring healthy food sources for the future
  • being able to ensure that there are sufficient and adequate food sources so that all people can live an active, healthy, and dignified life
  • having the ability to improve one’s financial income
  • having access to just markets, knowing where the food we buy comes from, and knowing that our food is healthy
  • having a healthy environment that is free from contamination
  • being able to obtain information to enrich knowledge and cultural practices

What is food sovereignty?

"Food sovereignty is the right of peoples to define their own food and agriculture; to protect and regulate domestic agricultural production and trade in order to achieve sustainable development objectives; to determine the extent to which they want to be self reliant; to restrict the dumping of products in their markets; and to provide local fisheries-based communities the priority in managing the use of and the rights to aquatic resources. Food sovereignty does not negate trade, but rather, it promotes the formulation of trade policies and practices that serve the rights of peoples to safe, healthy and ecologically sustainable production."
